9. Atop the Baltoro Glacier, Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan

The Baltoro Glacier - 40 miles long, up to two miles wide, and more than a 1,000-feet deep - is so large it defies imagination. Whole rivers tumble down its spine, disappearing into holes then reemerging with added fury. Some of the world's highest and most majestic peaks can be seen from this icy wonder, including K2, Broad Peak, and the Trango Towers.
