After a three-week traverse of the Karakoram mountains, we emerged at the tine stone-and-mud village of Hispar, probably the first Westerners to pass through in a year. I can't begin to imagine what this young girl thought of us, draped in Gore-Tex and other strange materials. Her younger sister is clutching a dried apricot, a prized crop of northern Pakistan
