29. On the Tingri Plains, Tibet, 1997

It was my first trip to Tibet, and we were gearing up to head to Advanced Basecamp on Cho Oyu (AKA The Goddess of Turquoise 8,201 meters, the mountain in the background). The generally brown plains outside of Tingri were a vibrant green after the long monsoon, thereby highlighting the mountains behind. This photo shows the contrasts which are Tibet: harsh yet lush, unforgiving yet welcoming.
