The hardest thing about photographing people in the Himilaya is that if they know you are taking their picture, they inevitably pose, therby diminishing (or sometimes enhancine) the essence of the moment. Thus, when I set out to photograph our group of yak herders for the 2001 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition, I did so from a distance with a long lens. I could not get enough of Chuldum;s face, for it tells like nothing else the difficulty of life on the Tibetan Plateau.
