25. A cotton-ball plant, Saussurea gossipiphora D. Don

Looking at this picture, you might imagine that the Himalayan summer is a world filled with light blue skies and snowy peaks set against fluffy coulds. In truth, it is not rare to camp for long periods in a corner of a valley that is soaked with cold rain every day - blue sky, or even an outline of the sun, might not appear for up to two weeks. Further, I took the photo right up close to the subject plant. As a result, the flowers appear larger than they would to a person standing nearby or bending over. To see these flowers on a large scale, I had to become like a pollinator, sitting or laying on the ground, not worrying about getting my hands or clothes dirty, and bringing my face right up to the flower.
