16. The Zanskari rainbow, Zangla, Zanskar, Jammu and Kashmir


Until the nineteenth century, Zangla was the capital of a tiny kingdom consisting of four Zanskari villages. Today the outline of the former castle, built on a rocky spur, still dominates the village located down below. Never did I see the place as beautiful as during that spring day, when it suffused with the auspicious light of a "water drinker" (As the Zanskarpas call rainbows). Leicaflex, 50mm, f 5,6.
