 Two guides and two trekkers (one, a three year old) at the headwaters of the Tirtan River, with the 5227m Sirikand Mahadev peak in the background. The Tirtan River is one of three major watersheds that comprise the Great Himalayan National Park. The headwaters, like other prominent geological or biological attributes of the region, are imbued with spiritual meaning and power. Ritual and prayer here and at other markers of the local sacred landscape mediate the human-environment relationship.
