One of the most challenging ways to traverse the Zanskar Mountains, a subrange of the Himalaya in northern India, is to follow the Jumlam, a trailless maze of river gorges and high passes. As of 1999, only about 100 Westerners had made this journey, which is navigable about three-to-four weeks a year, if the rivers are low. For eight days, we saw not a single soul - quite an accomplishment in the world's second most populous country.
