Guidelines for Preparing Book Reviews

Please contact the Book Reviews Editor if you would like to review a book for Himalayan Research Bulletin. Below are HRB's guidelines for contributors:

Format:
All manuscripts should be double-spaced on standard 8 1/2" x 11' paper. Double spacing applies to every part of your text, including any indented block quotations. Normally, endnotes should not be used, with references to other publications given in the body of the text in parentheses.

Reviewers should consult the Himalayan Research Bulletin for notes on formatting. Two hard copies should be sent to the review editor along with a floppy disk with the review on a separate file indicating the relevant word processing program used (preferably MS Word; WordPerfect is not acceptable).

Here is a model for presenting the bibliographic information on the book(s) you are reviewing:

Himalayan Dialogue: Tibetan Lamas and Gurung Shamans in Nepal By Stan Royal Mumford. Madison: The University of Wisconsin Press, 1989. Pp. xii + 286, 12 plates. $14.95
This information should appear at the top of the first page. Your name and academic affiliation should appear at the end of the text.

Length:
The journal is flexible in this assignment. We urge reviewers to communicate with the editor.

Critical Approach:
Good reviews are those that prove useful to the journal's broad multidiscipline audience: a terse summary of the book's content or argument, some indication of the adequacy of the treatment of the subject matter, and an assessment of the book's contribution to Himalayan studies.

Normally reviews will not be sent for reviewer revisions unless substantial changes seem warranted.
